09:58 pm

Im fixing yet another friends pc

This one is almost an antique!!!

specs:
800meg cleron (seems ok, 100mhz bus, so slow)
motherboard (running, but caps swollen and leaking)
384meg pc133 ram (seems ok but not enough)
cd rom (dead, will not eject tray)
dvd rom (good)
1.44 floppy (ok, but bios was set to 1.2meg)
80 gig hd (seems ok, but never been defragged in its life)
network card (intermittently faulty)
video card (dead fan)
ISA sound card (locks up machine randomly)
tv tuner (good)
even the case only has one side!

What a heap of trash! Its not really worth fixing, but sadly they need it to work,

Ive replaced just about all of it from old stuff I have laying about, managed to fix the cdrom, and wasted another weekend...

Im still looking for some ram, to upgrade it to 512 minimum, any one got some 256meg pc100/133 laying about in need of a good cause?

04:59 pm - Older Pc To give away (1gig Duron, system unit only

I'm having a bit of a clean out and have the following to give away to a good home.

Of course nothing is really free, I'm also on the scrounge for some stuff, So if you have any of the following... Most of these are for projects for other people.
Slimline Desktop case that takes a standard ATX motherboard.
Wireless nics and routers. 802.11g or better
DDR 333MHz SDRAM or better.

So if you want the Pc, and I have some notion of who you are, or friend of a friend etc, and your in Christchurch, Leave a message. Some install support can be provided.

This system has Ubuntu 7.10 installed on it. It would be suitable for word prossessing (open office), or Internet access. (An additional Ethernet connection to a local lan or ADSL modem is be required)Or just an upgrade from something slower

This is Just a System unit and power cable, no monitor, keyboard or mouse. There are others about who can probably set you up with these.

The Specs

1Gig Duron
512 meg ram (minus on board video ram)
cdrom drive (unknown speed, it works, never bothered looking)
1.44 floppy drive
8.6 gig Harddrive (a little noisy)
100meg Lan card
100 Watt Powersuply
FIC AE31 mothboard Specs and drivers can be found http://taiwan.fic.com.tw/support/motherboard/document.aspx?model_id=45

Looks like this, has a few scratches and dings

10:29 pm - because the hurd is doing it...

Your Score: The Frog
You scored 37% domestic, 42% gregarious, 25% trickster, and 32% intellect!

Wild, Solitary, Serious and Emotional: you are the Frog! Sensitivity, regeneration, renewal. In many cultures, frogs are a strong symbol of luck and wealth. Frog medicine teaches the power of transforming oneself, a natural path of change that occurs over a lifetime. Frog is also a symbol of femininity and fertility, and natural healing. Frog people tend to be pleasant, positive, and well in-tune with the energies around them.

This test categorized you based on four different axes of personality, which were then associated with a different animal. The four axes, as well as all possible results are explained below.

Wild/Domestic: This first axis categorizes you based on how much you are drawn to the outdoors, versus how much you are drawn to civilized situations. Domesticity has many shapes and forms, and varies from the joy of dolphins leaping next to a ship to the steadfast loyalty of a family dog.

Gregarious/Solitary: This axis measures how solitary you are. If you scored high, it means that you enjoy the company of other people, while a low score indicates that you prefer a more solitary lifestyle.

Trickster/Serious: This axis measures how well you line up with conventional trickster archetypes. People who fall into this archetype have a sense of humor and an excitable, highly chaotic streak. Scoring low doesn't mean that you don't have a sense of humor; it just means that you probably don't think dynamite is very funny.

Intellectual/Emotional: This last axis determines whether you are more emotional -- acting based on feelings and instinct, or rational and intelectual -- acting more on thought than on your gut feelings.

Well that one job done with...

Technically I'm unemployed again.

I start a new job on Monday

Feb. 25th, 2008

02:19 am

Its 2:30am Monday, I need to get up in 5 hours to go to work...

Can't sleep...

On the plus side i've found the list of Mini PCIe wlan cards that my laptop BIOS will allow me to use, next I will find out the id for the 802.11n card I want http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/wireless/wireless_n/overview.htm
Then to see if I can create a new BIOS that will accept this card without giving me a

104-Unsupported wireless network device detected.
System Halted. Remove device and restart.

Laptops that are locked down to particular hardware is just a dumb idea. 400 lashes to the person who thought up that idea.

12:05 am

Its been a really long week.

Working is not fun! Other than working,

Monday picked up a power adapter for a wireless project, but it didn't have enough current... ill give it a new home soon. It will fix up a friends mp3 player power charging hassles.

Tuesday went to see Sweeney Todd, im not particularly into musicals, but it a Tim Burton, so I had to go. It was very well done, only one song that I felt they didn't really need. Somewhat bloody though, even if the blood was really red and shiny and paint like. Not particularly memorable though. Might watch it again, might just have been my mind not in a store anything mode.

Wednesday, there was a Wednesday this week?

Thursday, made a power converter to connect at atx power supply to the wireless project.

Friday, I managed to breath life into a dead 108mb MIMO wireless router I was given a while back. Seems to work a lot better after the firmware down grade. Now I just need a MIMO nic to test it at full speed.
About 95% of the people I know are away for the next 3 days at CF. I'm feeling a little left out, even though I have little interest in CF.

Saturday, more Dvd's and snuggling planned.

Sunday, himm... no plans... probably housework or something equally droll

03:39 pm - I have a contract to review

The contract has a few badly worded clauses, I'm getting them sorted, and will probably be signing it, and starting work Monday

The job is only for 5 weeks, but will probably be extended

I think ill get a bus pass, save on parking hassles.

10:28 am - Job Update

Due to all the stress and lack of sleep this was causing me, I have told the new owner I don't wish to work for them.

This is a bad decision finality, but a good decision otherwise.

Today pcfixer effectively closed its doors. The client list has been sold, and the company is being wound down...

Its been sold to the competition. I have a job there if I want it, but there are many negatives againts that.

1) poxy uniform things.. (when will this retarded mentality that you can't do you job unless your in a monkey suit die? If someone arrived to fix my pc like that, I wound send them away and ask for the real technician, not the business toy boy/girl, whom seems only good for his/her looks)
2) Ment to use my own transport and petrol to get to jobs. (More travel equates to more tires, oil, servicing... and lots of petrol, not to mention the greater risk of accidents purely due to time on the roads etc.)
3) Ment to take jobs back to my own place to use my power and internet to fix them. Would need to convert the spare room into a workshop... don't want to do that.
4) Feel like a piece of meat, sold, for a bargain basement low price of $0

None of these costs are reembursed in any way, the pay is just ment to cover it...
The pay rate sounds ok at first glance but when you subtract all the costs involved and the number of hours you actually get paid vs the number of hours your actually working or traveling, the rate effectively halves, ending up only slightly better than minimum wage.

Not good!!

Sadly like most things, I don't have a choice, have a mortgage and need an income....

Life sucks then you die, I'm just tired of the waiting.

Blah!! this year isn't going very well at all...

New years was excellent, but could have been better.

Made and assortment of casual new years resolutions, Ie things I would like to stick to or to have happen, but I don't really expect to.

We had a house guest over new years, which was great, the house felt full and home like for a change. (your welcome back anytime)

New years day with the beach and socializing was good, even with the excess sand everywhere.

Birthday party last weekend was good, lots of interesting food, and got to catch up with a few people.

Sadly its mostly gone down hill from there. Between these events has been mostly nothing...
A void of filled with the emptiness of being...
No socializing, no calls, few visitors.

There has been much watching of media, but that is not really cutting it anymore, its just something to fill the gaps.

Back at work now, a newish job, working for pcfixer, geeks in cars going to your house to fix your pc. The job is sort interesting and it gets me out of the house, but the travel is horrible, as i'm only payed for the repair time not the travel...
But this may not last, apparently the business is about to be sold.

So is this it, this is my life?
Work all day, waste evenings in-front of the TV, sleep and repeat till dead?

I feel condemned to be empty and alone.. and I haven't even done anything to deserve it.

08:30 pm - On the scrounge

I'm looking for a few things

A mains to 5 Volt DC 3 Amp power supply, seems to be rare due to high amperage, is for some dlink equipment I have.

A mains to 18 DC volt 800mA power supply, for a scanner.

256meg or larger pc3200 memory, to upgrade a machine to 512meg (and thus make it useful)

Dead cd rom/dvd rom drive (the eject caddy rubber band) to fix a cdr that works fine, but doesn't eject.

A socket 939 motherboard, anything working

If you have any of these and can live without them cluttering up the place, let me know :)

Himm, I seem to have been owned by a cat today. I don't know where it belongs, but seems very friendly, and not at all scared of strangers.

I've given him some water, since its a dam hot day, if its still hanging around tomorrow, ill consider feeding him.

09:57 pm - Most of my life Ive been looking in vain for my user manual

Today I found a few pages

http://www.essortment.com/in/Lifestyles.Relationships/index.htm

I can't say they are correct in any way, but they are an intersting read for me.

Unrelated, something killed my server that was hosting kaos.parties.net.nz, No one told me it was down, thus is been down about 14 hours.
